Chapter 13

The rest of the evening was one of cooped-up misery. When Mrs. Harris resumed her normal story time, she went to extreme lengths. At one point, she flung her hand out so wildly that it sent an old antique tea kettle toppling off an end table to its untimely death on the floor. Page glared at me even as I ducked down to sweep up the ruined shards.

Later, the howling storm winds and driving rain smacking against my bedroom window kept me from resting well.

When I finally woke up, it was with horror beating against my breast. There was nothing in the room. I’d been sleeping on the floor. A quick tour of the house found that the other rooms were the same. No furniture, no wallpaper, no people. No anything, in fact. Somehow, the thief had gone from one room to another of the house, emptying each old room of its contents, while we all slept soundly. In the end, the thief had finally taken my family and guests too.

It was only when I woke up a second time—this time for real—that I realized the horrible first waking had only been a nightmare.

After a quick bite of rye toast and some marmalade, I hurried outside with the new padlock. Although the only signs of last night’s horrible storm were a few broken tree limbs scattered across the soggy lawn, the duct-taped storage shed door situation hadn’t improved. And after my recent argument with Page, I was not in the mood to be cleaning up her hilarious solution. No way, no how. So, I went back inside and set the padlock on the kitchen table with a quick, “It’s all yours.”

I was about to take advantage of the improved weather to finally head out to the beach and check out the rowboat, when Page interrupted my plans by pushing a stack of flyers across the table toward me.

“Don’t forget you’re supposed to take these to the post office today,” she reminded me.

I groaned. She was right. Awhile back I’d come up with a “fun” idea to raise awareness for the B&B by mailing colorful flyers with attached coupons all around the island. The ads had finally come in from the printer a few days ago, but I kept forgetting to mail them out.

It was no good putting it off any longer. My investigation into our local theft problem would just have to wait. I scooped up the armload of flyers and headed out the front door.
